A blue roof can be created on a typical hydrotech pmr protected membrane roof assembly utilizing standard loose stone for ballast. Using standard ballast stone the water in the blue roof is stored within the void spaces of the stone and to the required level above the ballast. These designs utilize a roofing membrane or waterproofing system as the primary water detention structure.

The membrane is specifically designed to be self adhered to a prepared substrate providing a high performance waterproofing barrier. A blue roof can be created at either roof or podium level or by combining both in a cascade design above the waterproofing membrane in a warm roof application and above the water flow reducing layer wfrl in an inverted application and should attenuate water for no more than a 24 hour period from the end of the maximum designed rainfall event. Blue roofs can be situated above the waterproofing membrane in a warm roof system or above the water flow reducing layer in an inverted application at both roof and podium levels. The bauderblue roof system can be constructed at either rooftop or podium level.

Maintenance activities can generally be performed by individual building owners or site maintenance staff as needed. Maintenance of blue roof systems focuses on the periodic removal of sediment and debris from outlet and storage areas in order to prevent clogging and limit deterioration of the roof membrane. The waterproofing membrane for a blue roof must be able to tolerate more frequent ponding water events for longer durations. The designed void space between the flat roof waterproofing membrane and hard or soft landscaping finish allows the stormwater to attenuate.

The four primary blue roof types are described below. Waterproofing membranes with welded seams and monolithic membranes which have a proven performance history in similar applications are appropriate materials for blue roofs.
